Australian miners are outpacing their global rivals when it comes to reporting on environmental and community issues.

KPMG's annual Global Mining and Reporting Survey found Australian companies far outranked their counterparts when it came to providing information about sustainability in their annual reports.

All of the Australian companies surveyed included detailed information about sustainability in their annual reports, compared with a global average of 60 per cent.

The worst performers were Canada, South Africa and a group of countries including Brazil, Russia, India and China, where less than 50 per cent of companies included detailed information.

Sustainability reports were most likely to include information on environmental, social, community, health and safety issues.

Climate change was universally acknowledged by Australian miners, with 100 per cent of Australian companies including information on climate change or greenhouse gas emissions in their report.

KPMG attributed the high rate of detailed reporting in Australia to the introduction of a framework on sustainable development by The Minerals Council of Australia.

The Australian Minerals Industry Framework for Sustainable Development was introduced in 2004. Signatories include BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Newcrest, Oxiana and Zinifex.
